Spotlight on Volunteers

Cove Burgh Hall operates entirely thanks to an amazing team of volunteers who devote their energy, time, and expertise to its success. This spotlight highlights the contribution of one of the Hall’s longest and most loyal volunteers – Richard Reeve.    He was invited to join the Board of Directors in 2001 by founding Chairman Peter Holland. This was when the Community were in the process of assuming responsibility and ownership of the Hall following its planned closure by Argyll & Bute Council.

For 25 years, Richard has been essential to the building's conservation, management, and fundraising and is proud of his involvement in achievements:

  • re-opening of a refurbished Hall in 2001/02.
  • creation of Live@CBH events during his Chairmanship, creating a new financial stream that enabled Hall hire rates to be kept affordable for local groups.
  • façade renovation and conservation in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland in 2019; and
  • encouraging a wide and lively range of Hall activities on the Peninsula for residents.

Richard has got a lot out of volunteering. There is a strong sense of satisfaction in contributing to such an important and special community and cultural facility. Enjoyment in working alongside the team of similarly minded CBH Directors and other volunteers, with a variety of skill sets to benefiting Hall and community alike. Pride in contributing to responsible custodianship of a prominent Category B listed building – a valuable legacy for next generations to inherit.

Cove Burgh Hall opened as a village hall in 1893.  It aimed to give Peninsula residents a venue for public meetings and social gatherings. How remarkable that, 133 years on, it continues to have relevance and meaning - perhaps even more so as society evolves for as Richard suggests:

In a world of changing demographics and a drift towards reliance on social media, the need for physical (as opposed to virtual) community interaction in a community space, which engenders "ownership", has important social benefits. ‘

Thank you Richard for your enthusiasm, energy and tireless commitment to Cove Burgh Hall!
