Based on the memoir The Outrun, by Amy Liptrot (who contributed to the film’s script), the film stars Saoirse Ronan, as a recovering alcoholic who returns from London to her childhood home in the Orkney Islands. Told in flashbacks, we see her student life in London, her growing dependency, and her struggle to regain and retain sobriety, drawing strength in her relocation to Orkney, especially the tiny island of Papa Westray. Ronan’s absorbing performance has been nominated and won numerous awards.
