Set in a small town in 1985 Ireland, father and coalman Bill discovers some startling secrets about the town’s convent – one of the later-to-become-notorious Magdelene convents – which houses unwed mothers and their babies. Haunted by memories of his own unhappy childhood, he is forced to face the consequences of revealing the convent’s activities, as the film explores the conflicts between moral courage and community complicity. Murphy’s performance has been highly acclaimed.
